Manager
Hello Christian County! My name is Mellisa Herwig and I am from Ashton, a small rural community in Northern Illinois. I am stepping into the role of Manager for the Christian County Farm Bureau. I grew up in Lee and Ogle counties. Growing up I helped my grandpa on his farm with the cows and grain. At this time is when my love for Hereford cattle began. I learned at an early age that I wanted to be involved in agriculture when I was “older”.
I was very involved in 4-H in Ogle County. I held many leadership positions during my ten years of 4-H. I was Federation secretary, reporter and president. I also served as my clubs secretary, reporter, and president as well during the years. For the last two years that I was involved in 4-H as a member I served as a county 4-H Ambassador.
Through junior high and high school I was very active in the Ashton-Franklin Center FFA. I competed in many CDE’s (Career Development Events) throughout my four years of high school as well as holding officer positions. I served as chapter reporter and president. During my FFA career I received my State FFA degree as well and my American FFA Degree.
After high school I attended Joliet Junior College for two years. While there I was active in the Student Agriculture Association club, serving as vice-president. I was also involved in Illinois PAS (Postsecondary Agriculture Students). I served on the 2008-2009 PAS state officer team, as vice president.
After completing my associate’s degree at JJC I transferred to Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois to major in Animal Science and minor in Agricultural Business. I was active in the School of Agriculture, by being involved with Collegiate FFA/PAS/AgEd Club, Alpha Zeta, Hoof-n-Horn Club, Ag Council, Ag-Vocators and Phi Beta Delta. I served as an officer in many of these organizations during my two years at WIU.
In May of 2011 I graduated with my bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois and accepted a position with the Illinois Farm Bureau just before graduation. I completed the 9 weeks of hands on training in the home office in Bloomington and in counties with managers that have been very involved with their county and farm bureau. I worked with managers in Carroll, Boone, Edwards and McHenry counties before being hired in Christian County.
I am very excited about working with everyone here and becoming a part of this area. Please stop by the office to introduce yourself.
